ABOUT THE ARTIST
Jeanne Butler graduated from CW Post College of Long Island University in 1976 with a BFA focusing in painting and drawing. Her background in drawing and painting has influenced her work in fiber. Butler’s work on paper and canvas was characterized by the layering technique she used which included the use of handmade papers, cheesecloth, oil paint and graphite. It was logical that the attraction to textiles in those paintings and drawings would lead her to working with textiles as the foundation of her art. While the work itself evolved into working predominantly in white for the last decade, her early quilts employed many of the same techniques but utilized more color. Although, still attracted to color, she does not anticipate moving away from the ‘white’ work for some time. Exploration of white has been not only an intriguing endeavor but a challenging one as well. Butler sees the calming, quietness of white as the perfect balance to her more outgoing personality. In a sense, she relates to her art work as the embodiment of the sense of peace and internal reflection that she strives for personally. She also considers her work to be strongly influenced by landscape and personal spiritual reflection. Jeanne Butler has lived in Huntington, NY for the past 28 years with her husband and frequents upstate Canaan, NY as her home away from home.
ABOUT THE WORK
Space and line converge in the layers of white. My work in fiber combines earlier experience in painting and drawing with the tactile nature of quilts. The work draws its aesthetic strength from its restraint. Sparseness as a compositional element conveys oxygen and infinity, sometimes calmness, united with order, to absorb viewers into a sense of mystery. I yield to a sense of quiet in my work.
Techniques and materials include oil paint, graphite, cotton, rayon and nylon threads; appliqué using cotton, silk and cheesecloth.
